The Nigerian Senate on Thursday distanced itself from the arrest warrant reportedly issued against Mele Kyari, former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, by its Committee on Public Accounts.

The upper chamber also disowned comments attributed to Senator Adams Oshiomhole of Edo North, who allegedly described the NNPC as “a bunch of criminals and thieves” during Wednesday’s committee hearing.

In response to the remarks, the NNPC firmly rejected the characterization, stating it was not a thief.

By clarifying its stance, the Senate sought to separate itself from the committee’s actions and Oshiomhole’s controversial comments, signaling an effort to manage tensions between lawmakers and the national oil company.
