The 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on Thursday as co-hosts Mexico face stiff battle against South Africa in the tournament’s opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The Group A encounter marks the beginning of the biggest World Cup in history, with 48 nations competing across Mexico, the United States and Canada over the next 39 days.
Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. local time, with over 80,000 fans expected to fill the historic stadium. Estadio Azteca will become the first venue to host the opening match of three FIFA World Cups, having previously staged the tournament openers in 1970 and 1986.
