The Oyo State Government has announced Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1448AH.
In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government emphasized the significance of the Hijrah, which commemorates Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622AD.
Oyelade described the holiday as a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community.
He urged residents to use the occasion for reflection and prayer, calling for peace, unity, and prosperity across the state and Nigeria.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” he said.
The declaration aligns Oyo with other states that have recognized the new Islamic year with public holidays, reinforcing the importance of cultural and religious observances in fostering unity.
