The United Kingdom has named Mr. Peter Vowles as the new British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.According to an official announcement by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) on Monday, June 15, 2026, Mr. Vowles will succeed Dr. Richard Montgomery CMG.
He is expected to assume the role in September 2026.
Peter Vowles is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in international development and diplomacy.
He is currently serving as British Ambassador to Zimbabwe (since October 2023). His previous postings include:Transformation Director at the FCDO (2022–2023) HM Ambassador to Myanmar (Yangon, 2021–2022)
Various senior roles in the Department for International Development (DFID) across Asia, Africa, and conflict zones, including Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
Notably, Vowles has strong ties to Africa, having worked in Zimbabwe as a teacher in the early 1990s and later in development roles.
