Peter Vowles to lead UK mission in Abuja from September 2026

The United Kingdom Government has appointed Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The appointment was announced by the UK Government on Monday, with Vowles set to assume office in Abuja in September 2026.

According to a statement by British High Commission on Tuesday, this development signals a continuation of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two countries across trade, development, and security.

He will succeed Richard Montgomery, who has served as the UK’s top diplomat in Nigeria and will remain in post until Vowles formally takes over.

“Vowles arrives in Nigeria with a wealth of diplomatic and development experience accumulated over decades of service within the UK’s foreign and development institutions.

“Most recently, he served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026, following an earlier posting as Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.
