Senate President Akpabio suspends legislative recess over insecurity


Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, announced the suspension of the ongoing legislative recess over the worsening security situation across the country.

Akpabio directed an emergency plenary sitting for senators to deliberate on the deteriorating security challenges.

The Senate had last week adjourned for recess to observe the Democracy Day holiday and allow lawmakers to engage with their constituents. The chamber was originally scheduled to resume plenary activities on July 7, 2026.

In a notice signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, and dated June 15, 2026, Akpabio instructed all senators to reconvene at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11.00 am.
