
Tension gripped Birnin Gwari town in Kaduna State on Friday after residents staged a protest over fresh attacks linked to suspected “repentant” bandits operating in the area.
The protest followed the killing of a commercial driver and the abduction of several residents in separate incidents, further worsening fears over the rising insecurity in the Birnin Gwari axis.
Angry youths and community members reportedly flooded parts of the town to express frustration over what they described as the failure of security measures to stop recurring attacks, despite repeated assurances of improved safety in the area.
The unrest was triggered by the killing of Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, a commercial driver who was reportedly attacked along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway.
Adamu was said to have been shot dead by armed men at Kwanan Giginya while transporting passengers on the route. He reportedly died at the scene after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
