Domestic airline operators in Nigeria, led by Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema, are pressing for an urgent meeting with President Bola Tinubu to discuss mounting charges and taxes that they say are crippling the aviation sector.
Onyema, speaking in an interview on ARISE News, stressed that while airlines appreciate government support, the current tax regime particularly the five percent Passenger Service Charge has become unsustainable.
“We need to sit down with Mr. President and tell him face to face. If any airline goes down, banks will take a hit, jobs will be lost, and insecurity will rise,” Onyema warned.
He explained that the levy, deducted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), erodes already thin profit margins in the industry.
“Aviation itself does not give you a five percent gain,” he noted, arguing that the charge unfairly burdens operators despite claims it is borne by passengers.
