The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the consumption or sale of certain banned alcoholic energy drinks following their seizure by Ghanaian authorities.

In a public alert, NAFDAC said the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority confiscated approximately 140 boxes of the products during regulatory enforcement in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

The affected products are:Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink, manufactured by Bel Beverages, Ghana.

Cody’s Vody Energy Mix, produced by Jens Warneke Export GmbH, Bremen, Germany.

NAFDAC noted that these alcoholic energy drinks were previously prohibited in Nigeria due to safety concerns. The combination of alcohol and stimulants in such beverages can mask the effects of intoxication, leading consumers especially young adults and adolescents  to underestimate their level of impairment.

Health Risks Highlighted

The agency warned that consumption of these products may result in:Excessive alcohol intake

Increased risk-taking behaviour

Impaired judgment and coordination

Cardiovascular effects such as increased heart rate
