Ahead of the official commencement of the 2027 election campaigns, scheduled to start on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, for national positions and Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for state-level positions, the early drumbeats of campaigns had begun to roll deftly in parts of the country, against the guidelines and provisions of the Electoral Act.
Following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revised its timeline to match updated statutory pre-election windows, leading to an adjusted election calendar.
Officially, public campaign windows for Presidential and National Assembly campaigns begin on August 19, 2026, and run until 24 hours before election day. While the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns begin on September 9, 2026, and run until 24 hours before election day.
