For nearly three decades, the Cottage Hospital in Okoroba, a riverine community in the Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was more than a health facility.
It was where babies were delivered safely, the sick found treatment, and neighbouring communities turned to in emergencies.
Residents told our correspondent that presently, the same hospital has become a place of silence, overgrown weeds and abandoned buildings
The Chairman of the Okoroba Council of Chiefs, High Chief Douglas Etulankimor Sampson-Eteli, said the hospital that once served communities across Nembe and parts of Ogbia has deteriorated beyond recognition and usefulness.
The hospital was built by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited between 1993 and 1997 as a replacement for an earlier facility destroyed during canalisation work around the company’s oil operations. It was inaugurated on May 8, 1997, by the then acting Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, Habu Daura.
