Debutants Malawi announced their arrival at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in stunning fashion on Tuesday, defeating defending champions Nigeria 3-2 in a thrilling Group C encounter in Rabat, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Scorchers owed their famous victory to sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga, who struck twice and once respectively to hand the record 10-time champions a shock opening-day defeat.
After a tightly contested first half, Temwa broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, timing her run perfectly to beat the offside trap before slotting into an empty net past Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Just six minutes later, younger sister Tabitha doubled Malawi’s advantage, racing onto a swift counter-attack before beating both the Nigerian defence and Nnadozie to make it 2-0.
Nigeria responded through captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit and revive hopes of a comeback.
