A Nigerian public health researcher, Nimotalai Kassim, has developed a data-driven framework aimed at helping public health agencies in the United States identify firearm violence risks earlier and deploy prevention resources more effectively.
Kassim, whose work combines epidemiological surveillance, geospatial analysis, behavioural health research and healthcare coordination, said the model was designed to move firearm violence prevention beyond traditional law enforcement by addressing it as a public health challenge.
She said her experience with the Connecticut Department of Public Health in the US inspired the approach after she used Geographic Information Systems to identify communities with elevated firearm injury risks.
