US Congress Intervenes in Nnamdi Kanu Case, Urges Secretary of State to Engage Nigeria

The United States Congress has called for diplomatic engagement with the Nigerian government over the ongoing legal issues surrounding the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The move followed the adoption of a resolution by the US House of Representatives, which urged American authorities to engage Nigeria on concerns relating to Kanu’s trial, detention conditions and access to fundamental rights.

POLITICS NIGERIA gathered that the resolution, identified as H.Res. 1321, was adopted on May 22, 2026, after it was introduced by Congressman John James.

In the resolution, US lawmakers called on the Nigerian government to ensure that all judicial proceedings involving Kanu are handled in line with constitutional provisions and internationally recognised human rights standards.

The lawmakers also urged the US Secretary of State to open discussions with Nigerian authorities on issues bordering on due process, detention conditions and respect for fundamental freedoms.
