What you need to know about ovarian cyst

Ovarian cysts form when fluid accumulates within a membrane inside an ovary. A cyst is like a sac, a pocket of fluid just like a blister, and the membrane which encases it separates it from the other tissues that surround it. A cyst may contain liquid, the most common type, gas, or a semi-solid material. Whatever it may contain, therefore, a cyst is an abnormality whose nature often requires confirmation.

Their size varies considerably, but cysts less than five centimetres in diameter often do not need treatment. Most of the time, ovarian cysts are small, do not produce any symptoms, and are therefore considered harmless, with these types ultimately resolving on their own. At other times, they can rupture or twist, thereby causing significant pain and bleeding through the vagina or both.

When it twists in a situation known as torsion, it constitutes a medical emergency often requiring emergency surgery.
