JUST IN: Bayelsa Governor Diri Removes Traditional Ruler Over Insecurity

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially removed the suspended paramount ruler of Swali Community, His Highness Chief Wilcox Seiyefa, over security concerns in the area.

The decision was announced on Tuesday at the Government House in Yenagoa during a meeting with key stakeholders from Swali Community. The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor, Peter Akpe, acting on behalf of Governor Diri.

The state government said the action followed the recommendations of a fact-finding committee set up to investigate the security situation in Swali.

Chief Seiyefa had earlier been suspended alongside members of his Council of Chiefs in May 2025 after allegations linking the community leadership to rising insecurity and unrest in the area.

According to the government, the latest decision to withdraw recognition from the traditional ruler was taken in line with the provisions of the Bayelsa State Chieftaincy Law, particularly as it relates to maintaining peace, order and good governance.
