President Bola Tinubu has launched Power Force, a national technical skills programme that will train 5,000 young Nigerians to support the nationwide deployment of smart electricity meters.
The initiative, unveiled on Thursday is a move aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of Nigeria’s power sector while creating new employment opportunities, according to the government.
It will be implemented under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development. It is designed to address the shortage of certified smart meter installers, expand nationwide smart metering and improve the efficiency of Nigeria’s electricity distribution system.
Smart meters are a critical component of modern electricity networks because they digitally measure energy consumption in real time, reduce reliance on estimated billing, improve revenue assurance for electricity distribution companies and support data-driven management of the national grid.
