Thirty-eight African tech startups raised a total of US$260 million in the second quarter of 2026, down 40 per cent on the US$427 million raised in the same period of 2025.

Total investment into the African tech startup ecosystem increased by almost 50 per cent to US$1.64 billion in 2025 as the sector began to slowly recover from the impacts of the global capital shortage, according to the 11th edition of the annual African Tech Startups Funding Report released by startup news and research portal Disrupt Africa

Numbers from Q1 2026 had suggested this year would at least match, and probably surpass, 2025, with 40 startups banking US$382,150,000 in funding. Yet in Q2, 38 startups raised just $260 million, substantially down from the same period last year, and raising concerns African tech could be in for another funding dip.

Extrapolated over the course of the year, that would be 156 startups (down from 178 in 2025), and an annual 2026 total of US$1.28 billion, down from US$1.6 billion in 2025.
