The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) has elected Zambia’s Kezias Mwale as its Secretary-General for the 2027–2030 term, entrusting him with the responsibility of driving the continent’s digital transformation agenda over the next four years.
Mwale emerged victorious at the ATU plenipotentiary conference held in Abuja on Friday, securing 21 of the 34 votes cast by member states to defeat four other candidates.
In his acceptance speech, Mwale described his election as a mandate to serve the entire continent rather than any individual country, pledging to lead the Union with impartiality, transparency and accountability.
“This victory is not mine alone, nor does it belong to any one nation. It belongs to every member state represented here today and to every African who believes in the transformative power of digital technologies,” he said.
