Alibaba, a Chinese technology giant, has launched its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, Qwen3.8-Max, marking another major step in China’s competition with leading AI developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
The new model contains 2.4 trillion parameters, which makes it one of the world’s largest open-weight AI models, although it is slightly smaller than Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, which has 2.8 trillion parameters.
Alibaba said Qwen3.8-Max adopts a mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture, meaning that while the model has 2.4 trillion parameters, it activates only about 95 billion parameters for each task.
This approach reduces computing costs, lowers latency and improves efficiency without sacrificing performance.
The model can process up to one million tokens of text, images and videos in a single prompt, allowing it to analyse lengthy documents, software codebases and multimedia content.
Its release pushed Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares up about 7 percent, which reflects investor confidence
