Coffee may help shield the liver from fat, scarring, and cancer — Study

Regular coffee drinkers are less likely to develop cirrhosis or liver cancer and have a lower risk of dying from liver disease than people who do not drink coffee, according to one of the largest studies ever conducted on coffee and liver health.

Researchers also found that coffee drinkers had healthier livers, with less fat, inflammation and scarring, suggesting the popular beverage may help protect against chronic liver disease.

The study, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, followed 354,957 adults from the UK Biobank for a median of 13 years. None of the participants had cirrhosis or liver cancer when the study began.

During the follow-up period, coffee drinkers consistently had better liver health than non-coffee drinkers.
