The Edo State Government says it will demolish buildings and other structures erected on waterways and flood channels as part of measures to reduce the impact of flooding across the state.
The government also disclosed that it has begun compiling the names of victims affected by recent flood incidents to facilitate intervention efforts.
Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EDOSEMA), Jerry Idahosa, made this known during a media briefing in Benin City on Monday.
Idahosa said the agency had discovered that several buildings were constructed on the Benin moat, while many drainage channels had been blocked by indiscriminate waste disposal, worsening the risk of flooding.
He added that internally displaced persons’ camps had been prepared in anticipation of possible flood emergencies across the state.
