Newcastle United and Liverpool are set to honour club legend Kevin Keegan with a special tribute before their Premier League opening fixture at St James’ Park following his death at the age of 75.

According to BBC Sport on Thursday, the two clubs are in discussions over plans to mark Keegan’s remarkable contribution to both teams when they meet on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in the first game of the new Premier League season.

Newcastle confirmed that it is working with Liverpool, supporter groups and the Premier League to ensure the former England captain receives a fitting farewell.

“Newcastle United is in communication with Liverpool to ensure Kevin Keegan’s memory is marked fittingly before the game,” the club said in a statement.

The club added that it would work closely with its Fan Advisory Board, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust and Wor Flags to shape the tributes.
