Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, and its 55 member associations have unanimously agreed to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup and the Club World Cup, if FIFA proceeds with plans to sell ownership stakes in its major tournaments to private investors.
The decision was reached during an emergency virtual meeting chaired by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin on Thursday.
This follows FIFA’s announcement earlier this week of a proposal to create a commercial subsidiary that would oversee its major competitions and allow outside investors to acquire minority stakes.
In a statement issued after the meeting, UEFA said all 55 member associations were united in rejecting the proposal.
“We unanimously and unequivocally reject FIFA’s proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors,” the statement said.
