FCTA Issues Urgent Rabies Alert After Two Deaths In Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued an urgent public health warning to pet owners after confirming eight cases of rabies and two deaths in Abuja, urging residents to vaccinate their dogs and cats immediately.

The confirmed fatalities occurred in Gwagwalada and Kwali Area Councils, where victims were reportedly bitten by rabid dogs.

Health officials warned that rabies is a deadly viral disease transmitted through the bites of infected animals, particularly dogs and cats, and is almost always fatal once symptoms begin to appear in humans.

Residents have been advised to ensure their pets are vaccinated and to report any suspected rabies cases or animal bites to the appropriate authorities without delay.

The FCTA also urged anyone bitten by a dog or cat to immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and plenty of running water before seeking urgent medical attention, noting that prompt treatment can prevent infection.
