The Federal Government is expanding Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure into the education sector through a strengthened partnership between the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) targeting about 80 million learners nationwide.
The initiative, planned to extend trusted digital identity services to the learners across Nigeria, centres on integrating the Learner Identification Number (LIN) with the National Identification Number (NIN) through the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS), creating a unified digital identity framework designed to improve education planning, service delivery and data-driven policymaking.
The integration forms part of the government’s broader strategy to build digital public infrastructure by linking education records with Nigeria’s national identity ecosystem. Rather than maintaining separate identity and education databases, the initiative establishes a single, verified digital identity for every learner, enabling secure authentication throughout their academic journey.
