The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that no fire occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, following safety concerns after smoke was observed in parts of the building.
In an official statement released on Sunday, FAAN explained that the smoke was caused by the automatic discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system—a gas system designed to extinguish fires without damaging sensitive electronic equipment or infrastructure.
Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, confirmed that flight and terminal operations have resumed following the disruption.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal,” Agbebire said in the statement. “The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation is currently being investigated.”
