FIFA has moved to douse global outrage trailing a new commercial subsidiary proposal from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, insisting the FIFA World Cup itself remains untouched.
The backlash has spread from UEFA to Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s football federation, with critics accusing Infantino of turning the game’s future into a bargaining chip.
However, former Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, who doubles as deputy chairperson of FIFA’s Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee, has thrown his weight behind the proposal, arguing that it stands to boost funding for member associations such as Nigeria’s.
Pinnick said football should not treat every reform from Infantino as a scandal, adding, “We shouldn’t call everything a controversy.”
The proposed entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), would bundle FIFA’s broadcast rights, sponsorship, ticketing and licensing operations into one commercially-focused company.
