Nigeria is once again betting on a “super grid” to fix Africa’s most populous but unreliable power market, reviving a strategy that has been dogged by long silences and unmet targets even as the federal government insist this attempt will be different.
The latest push comes nearly ten months after the government first floated the idea in October 2025 that it was in talks with China’s Export-Import Bank for a $2 billion loan to build new transmission infrastructure linking the country’s eastern and western industrial corridors.
Adebayo Adelabu, then minister of power, described the proposed super grid as central to the government’s strategy for modernising the country’s electricity infrastructure.
The plan, according to Adelabu on October 6, 2025, was meant to draw large commercial power users back onto a national grid many had abandoned over its unreliability.
