The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering a full audit of its electoral technology systems and a mock presidential election as key steps to strengthen preparations for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to Amupitan, the proposals stem from lessons and concerns identified during the 2023 general elections, particularly around the reliability of election technology.
The commission is evaluating the feasibility of auditing all its systems and conducting a simulated presidential election to thoroughly test processes and technology before the actual polls.
He noted that these initiatives were not originally included in the commission’s budget but emphasized that INEC would explore avenues to implement them if approved, given their potential to enhance electoral credibility.
