The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to strengthen its collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by using the National Identification Number (NIN) to verify voters and eliminate duplicate registrations ahead of future elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by NIMC’s Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan explained that the initiative builds on the recently signed National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, and aligns with INEC’s new online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform, which already requires applicants to provide their NIN for identity verification.
“The Commission sees enormous opportunities for collaboration with NIMC, particularly in voter registration, data verification and the elimination of duplicate voter records,” Amupitan said.
He added that deeper integration with NIMC would simplify voter registration and enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
