Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, says the rapid growth of digital technology has accelerated the spread of misinformation and disinformation, underscoring the need for credible journalism built on accuracy, fairness and verification.
Speaking on Monday while delivering the keynote address at the inaugural Arewa Media Summit in Kano, the minister said the digital age has transformed communication and created new opportunities for economic growth, but has also amplified the challenge of false information circulating online.
According to Idris, the speed at which false information spreads has made the role of professional journalists more critical than ever in safeguarding public trust and supporting democratic governance.
“Falsehood often travels faster than truth. That is why professional journalism has never been more important. Credible journalism must continue to stand for accuracy, fairness, verification and responsibility,” the minister says.
