Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany coach after the national team’s 2026 World Cup exit at the round of 32 stage.

The 38-year-old coach leaves the post after almost three years in the role, and despite a defiant stance to continue after Germany were sent packing from North America by Paraguay, who shocked the 2014 World Cup champions 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 scoreline. The defeat is the third consecutive World Cup tournament that Die Mannschaft has failed to reach the round of 16.

Germany had shown early intent with a 7-1 win over Curacao but was ultimately denied further progress into the latter rounds, and Nagelsmann thinks the disappointment requires a fresh start.
