Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his opposition to a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, criticising President Bola Tinubu for adopting the same arrangement again ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Kwankwaso said he was surprised by Tinubu’s choice and urged the President to present a religiously balanced ticket before the nomination window closes.
“I’m even surprised that the President again is presenting the same type of ticket,” he said. “I believe he still has time from now to the time of substitution to have a balanced ticket.”
While acknowledging that a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket is not inherently wrong, Kwankwaso argued that Nigeria’s diversity makes religious balance preferable for national unity and a sense of belonging.
He cited his own 2023 decision to pick an archbishop as running mate and the 1993 SDP ticket of MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe,
