Lagos mulls AI deployment in primary healthcare

Lagos State is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies in its primary healthcare system, with electronic medical records, patient documentation, voice transcription and clinical support identified as potential areas of application.

The initiative forms part of efforts by the state government to address persistent challenges in primary healthcare delivery through innovation, improved resource utilisation and stronger collaboration among healthcare stakeholders.

Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, disclosed this during the 2026 Strategic Management Retreat organised by Lagos State Health District I.

Ogunyemi said discussions had taken place with a technology group known as IED on possible applications of AI in primary healthcare, particularly in improving medical documentation and supporting healthcare professionals.

Although the discussions remain at the exploratory stage, the development signals Lagos State’s interest in leveraging emerging technologies to address operational challenges within its primary healthcare system.
