
A Nigerian lawyer, Waliu Taofik, has offered his legal perspective on the recent civil wedding of popular content creator Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, and his partner, Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, also known as Jarvis, following widespread online discussions over divorce, property rights and polygamy.
The legal clarification comes after videos of the couple’s court wedding went viral on Wednesday, prompting debate over whether Peller, a Muslim, could legally marry another woman after contracting a statutory marriage under the Marriage Act.
Reacting in a post on his X account, Taofik maintained that Nigerian law permits a Muslim man who has married under the Marriage Act to subsequently marry another Muslim woman under Islamic law.
According to him, the statutory marriage does not invalidate a Muslim man’s ability to contract a marriage under Islamic rites.
