Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have explained the departure of Michael Edwards, saying the respected football executive left after completing the key objectives set out when he returned to the club in 2024.
Edwards has stepped down as FSG’s chief executive of football after just two years of a three-year contract, ending his second spell with the club.
In a statement, FSG described his exit as a “planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities”. Group president Mike Gordon admitted the ownership was disappointed to lose Edwards but thanked him for his contribution.
“We are naturally disappointed to see Michael leave,” Gordon said, praising the work he carried out during a crucial period for both Liverpool and FSG.
Edwards returned in March 2024 to oversee Liverpool’s transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure while also helping shape FSG’s wider multi-club football strategy.
