Marvel has named Nigerian-Sierra Leonean British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, unveiling him in a surprise announcement at San Diego Comic-Con weekend.
The 32-year-old, who rose to prominence as Gus Sackey in HBO’s Industry, will take on the role of T’Challa’s son in the third film in the franchise.
Director Ryan Coogler introduced Jonsson on stage before a cheering crowd, while the actor thanked Coogler and Marvel boss Kevin Feige for the opportunity to join the superhero universe.
“I want you to give a warm welcome to our new Black Panther: Mr David Jonsson,” Coogler said on stage.
“Thank you Ryan. Thank you Kevin. Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said.
Jonsson’s casting gives Marvel a fresh lead for one of its most iconic properties, while adding a strong cultural dimension to the role.
