Dr. Karl Toriola, MTN Nigeria CEO, says future telecommunications tariff adjustments in Nigeria should be implemented gradually and responsibly, warning that large, infrequent increases place unnecessary financial pressure on consumers while creating uncertainty for operators.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Toriola says the tariff adjustment approved in January 2025 was essential to stabilising the telecommunications industry, but future reviews should allow operators to recover part of rising inflation through smaller, periodic adjustments rather than major hikes.
“The issue of tariff increases must be done in a responsible, moderated way,” Toriola says.
“With this large tariff increase, there is going to be a little bit of time before the next series of increases come. But over time, what you want is a pass-through of a portion of inflation on an ongoing basis, as is done in other industries.”
