The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is focusing on reforms driven by evidence to enhance health insurance access and bolster financial security for Nigerians, according to Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, the Director-General of the authority.
Ohiri made these remarks on Monday during the inaugural Nigeria Health Finance Research and Learning Forum, which was centered on the theme “Evidence and Learning for Nigeria’s Health Financing Future: Building a Locally Led Research and Learning Ecosystem.”
He indicated that the authority is now turning towards locally sourced research to inform health financing reforms, emphasizing that Nigeria must move away from reliance on sporadic studies that are designed and commissioned abroad.

“For an extended period, our health financing efforts in Nigeria have been influenced by well-meaning studies that were designed, commissioned, analyzed, reported, synthesized, and presented to us at the conclusion,” Ohiri stated.
