Nigeria has called on African countries to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), broadband infrastructure, cloud computing, satellite communications and cybersecurity, warning that the continent’s competitiveness in the global digital economy will depend on how effectively it harnesses emerging technologies.
The call was made at the Seventh Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries in Abuja, where ministers, regulators and industry leaders from across Africa gathered to define the continent’s priorities ahead of major international telecommunications engagements, including the 2026 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference.
Speaking on behalf of Senator Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), said digital technologies have become indispensable drivers of economic growth, innovation, public service delivery and regional integration.
