The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of a group of Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius, announcing that they are now on their way back to Nairobi.
The Commission disclosed the development on Monday, saying the girls had regained their freedom after diplomatic interventions and assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding their detention and prevent a recurrence.
The case gained national attention after a viral video circulated online showing the young women in detention at an airport in Mauritius.
The footage triggered public concern and prompted calls for the Federal Government to intervene on their behalf.
An Instagram user identified as #Queenbethia, who shared the video on Sunday, appealed to Nigerians to draw the attention of relevant authorities to the matter.
