The appointment of Nigeria’s first indigenous female neurosurgeon, Dr Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim, as Medical Director of a children’s hospital in the United States has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians describing her career move as another reflection of the country’s growing brain drain in the health sector.
Checks by PUNCH Online on Tuesday showed that Aliu-Ibrahim currently serves as Medical Director at Freeman Children’s Clinic, a facility under Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri.
Her profile on the hospital’s website lists her as a paediatrician at the clinic located on McIntosh Circle, Joplin.
Her appointment has, however, generated mixed reactions on social media, with many lamenting the continued migration of highly skilled Nigerian medical professionals.
A medical doctor, Daniel Popoola, said the development highlighted the deepening crisis in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
