The President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Audu Amba, has challenged the Federal Government to improve funding, infrastructure and teachers’ welfare in public schools as students from private schools continue to dominate Nigeria’s outstanding performances in global academic competitions.
Amba, who spoke with The PUNCH on Thursday, said the dominance of private schools in international competitions was not necessarily because they had the best teachers, noting that some of the most experienced and highly qualified teachers were found in public schools.
He, however, blamed poor learning conditions, inadequate funding and welfare challenges in public schools for the inability of many students in the sector to compete favourably with their counterparts in private institutions.
