OpenAI has unveiled its first custom artificial intelligence accelerator, dubbed Jalapeño, a move that could eventually make AI services such as ChatGPT faster, cheaper and more widely accessible to millions of users in Nigeria and around the world.

Developed in partnership with Broadcom and systems manufacturer Celestica, Jalapeño marks OpenAI’s entry into semiconductor development as the company seeks greater control over the computing infrastructure powering its rapidly growing AI ecosystem.

The custom chip is designed specifically for large language model (LLM) inference, the process through which AI systems such as ChatGPT generate responses to user prompts.
