The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Governor Ademola Adeleke’s suspension of all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state, describing the move as unconstitutional and beyond his powers.
In a statement by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC argued that Adeleke’s order directing security agencies to halt NURTW operations and arrest anyone presenting themselves as union officials violates Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of association.
Governor Adeleke had issued the directive after a security meeting, citing leadership crises within the union.
The order came shortly before the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), aligned with the APC, announced caretaker committees to manage transport unions pending consultations with NURTW’s national leadership.
