Police arrest eight over deadly Gujungu market unrest in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with the violent unrest that erupted at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area, claiming the lives of two people and leaving another injured.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the arrests followed sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at tracking down those involved in the disturbances.

According to the statement, the crisis began on July 26 following a misunderstanding between a soldier, Nura Bashir, and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, of Miga Local Government Area, at the market.

During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed Biniya with a knife. The victim was rushed to a medical facility, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor.

The police said the incident triggered widespread violence as hoodlums allegedly attacked a police station, fired bows and arrows at security personnel,
