… as Army appoints four GOCs for new divisions
President Bola Tinubu had last week greenlit one of the biggest military expansions in Nigerian history, approving the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions alongside a massive drive to recruit 28,000 new personnel. The sweeping changes aim to decentralise the security architecture and boost the military’s operational effectiveness on the frontlines of the nation’s protracted security crisis.
However, the ambitious strategy lands against a backdrop of deep-seated internal friction. Security and public sector experts who spoke to BusinessDay believe that while the expansion is expected to build on the administration’s sustained investments in the Armed Forces, previous cases of poor funding, corruption and absence of strong welfare packages may serve as obstacles to desired results.
