Fossil fuels still generated 57 per cent of the world’s electricity last year despite the rapid growth of renewable energy, according to a report by the Pew Research Centre based on data from energy think tank Ember.
The report said electricity generated from coal, natural gas and oil fell as a share of global generation from 65 per cent in 2000 to 57 per cent last year.
It added that the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy estimated that coal, gas and oil still accounted for 86 per cent of global primary energy consumption, a share that has remained largely unchanged over the past two decades.
According to the report, wind and solar power have expanded rapidly, particularly solar energy.
