Seven regional blocs redefining AI competition

Artificial intelligence is significantly shaping the new global economic system. Countries that lead in AI laboratories, AI company valuations, infrastructure and governance are securing their future wealth dominance, ARINZE NWAFOR writes

The world is travelling on a high‑speed lane as every new day comes with tremendous developments in artificial intelligence. AI has potential in medical breakthroughs, science, engineering and economic growth. Nigeria and other countries are finding their place. They are not sitting idle.

Nigeria’s recent launch of ATLAS Umoja, a pan‑African artificial intelligence platform designed to develop large language models that understand African languages, indicates that the race to dominate AI has shifted beyond individual countries to regional blocs.

As Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr Bosun Tijani said, “Artificial intelligence represents one of the greatest opportunities for Africa’s transformation”.

Governments compete in frontier AI laboratories and multibillion‑dollar technology companies and increasingly through investment in computing infrastructure
